Emotional Spring Cleaning [Dec. 1st, 2007|11:43 am]
[mood | pensive]

Greetings and salutations, LJ friends.

I've created a new LJ, [info]nothingisstatik

I have decided that I need to make an effort to write more before I implode. Feel free to friend me. However, I must warn you:

This new LJ is most likely going to be quite personal, which means there is a possibility that at times I may make you uncomfortable, bore you to death,  and share too much information. So, I will not be offended if pass on that. :-P

I'm going through a huge transition in my life and at this point, no topic is off limits to me.

With that being said, my complete digital/nerd/tech side is being reborn on the web again as well, so you can find my non-personal geek blog at
ilovetheinternets.com / whoneedsoxygen.net There isn't any new content as of yet because I am slowly inputting 2 years of lost entries from archive.org
but regular posting should resume soon.

I plan on keeping this account around, as I plan on becoming more regular with reading everyone's LJs again. Does that make sense? I feel like I need to be schooled in the use and etiquette of LJ.

So, whatever is clever.

[mood | numb]

So, LJ is getting fancy, I just loaded it up to post and it already had my last draft. Which, I will not post as it was...well..I guess we'll just skip that. Or save it for a friends only.

This is one of those, "I"m not dead." posts...but really,

am I dead?

Maybe I'm just here because my server is down. Or maybe I'm just here because everything is down. Or maybe ...sigh. Or maybe.

omgz. a journal for teh peepz teh read. lolrzZZz [Jul. 27th, 2006|01:03 pm]
Not too long ago I received an LJ nudge. So, I figure, what the hell. Half the people who have me listed on their friends list, probably have no idea why I'm there, except to probably allow me to continue to lurk around their LJ's. Which I do actively because I'm creepy. I'll work on the commenting thing. Also, I figure, maybe if I attempt to post something on here, I'll inspire myself to return to updating my other blogs. (Which could be a major debuff to my current addiction that occupies what little time I spend online)

However, unfortunately for you, this is one of those boring personal updates. Feel free to keep scrolling by.

Pez MP3 Player & MobiBLUE [Dec. 15th, 2005|10:02 am]
I'm in love with these two mp3 players. Although I have no use for an MP3 player, if I did, I'd want one of these. Then again, I guess I could just use my PSP. Anyway, check them out.

Pez MP3 Pez MP3 player - For those of you that actually know me, know that I collect Pez. (Yes, I'm not just a geek, but a dork too) This explains why I’m so infatuated with the Pez MP3 player. Capacity: 512MB.

MobiBLU MP3 Player MobiBLU Cube - A Wal-Mart concoction, that's the size of a quarter. The smallest MP3 player I've seen, yet. Capacity: 512MB and 1GB.

Web-based RSS/RDF/ATOM Feed Aggregator [Nov. 17th, 2005|10:06 am]
I've recently started using Gregarious. Gregarious is a web-based RSS/RDF/ATOM feed aggregator designed to run on your own web server. For a while I used a desktop-based aggregator and then I tried Feed on Feeds (another aggregator designed to run on your own web server). Feed on Feeds still needs work, in my opinion.

There are plenty of great desktop-based aggregators, but I wanted to be able to access my feeds on the web, from anywhere at anytime. There are also plenty of sites that do this for you too, however, running your own is always more appealing.

Gregarious is very simple to install and configure. I've been slowly adding feeds, but the blogroll for all the Tampa blogs is HUGE, so it's been taking a while.

Gregarious is very flexible, it has support for themes and you can create your own. It uses AJAX for tagging, search enabled, supports OPML, and adheres to web standards.

So if you're looking to run your own web-based feed aggregator, give Gregarious a try, it's top notch software. And of course, like all well-developed programs, it's free!

Seminole Heights Rapist and Murderer? [Nov. 10th, 2005|12:17 pm]
Steven Lorenzo Steven Lorenzo, of Tampa (213 W. Powhatan Ave), and Scott Schweickert, of Orlando and Illinois, have been implicated in the violent murders of two gay men. Steven Lorenzo was indicted in November, 2004, on charges that he drugged and raped seven men. And is charged with six counts of "knowingly and intentionally distributing for human consumption a substance containing a detectable amount of gammahydroxybutyric acid, also known as GHB, and gamma-butyrolactone, also known as GBL."

Scott Schweickert Scott Schweickert is in jail on charges linking him to a crime of violence. In an affidavit, a federal agent said Schweickert described how he helped dispose of Galehouse and Wachholtz's bodies after Lorenzo had killed them.

The victims, Jason Galehouse and Michael Wachholtz

This is a little too close to home.

Update: Steven Lorenzo was found guilty Thursday on all 10 counts of drugging, raping and torturing nine men.

Prosecutors also said Lorezno, along with Scott Schweikert, murdered Jason Galehouse and Michael Wachholtz in December 2003. But he has not been charged with their murders.

Schweikert will face a federal trial later.

Try City of Heroes [Nov. 5th, 2005|12:18 pm]
I have two invites for a 14 day trial of City of Heroes, no credit card required. If you're interested let me know and I'll send you the link to download the game and the serial number to start the trial. I might actually have more than that, as I have two City of Villains (CoV) pre-order boxes and official game boxes, and they came in both. But, for now, I have two.

Update:
They're all gone.

Splogging [Oct. 22nd, 2005|10:10 am]
I'm almost completely finished with 2 of my projects: new server, new design. As of right now, Word Press is fully functional. Which only benefits me, of course. I now receive an e-mail when a comment is posted, a feature I haven't had in over a year. (Which would have changed a year ago if I started my projects at that time.) Also, when a comment is posted you are no longer redirected to a blank page.

Now that I get an e-mail for every comment, I almost want to disable this feature all together because of comment spam. (Now called Splogging.)

If my blacklist gets any longer, Word Press will reject every comment submitted. I'm even getting bombarded by trackback spam.

So, my question is for fellow Word Press users: What plugins or methods are you using to combat spam? I'm trying to figure out the best approach without having to moderate 50+ comments a day and still have "real comments" without them getting lost in the blackhole of blacklists.

Google - A Household Word.. [Oct. 18th, 2005|09:49 am]
And a name? Walid Elias Kai, a Ph.D. in search engine marketing, and his wife named their baby, GOOGLE. I'll refrain from numerous bad jokes.

Is there a new trend in naming babies after corporations and current events? How about baby Saddam Sars?

ISP Wars [Oct. 16th, 2005|10:12 am]
Before we moved I put in an order to transfer my service with Verizon, including DSL. I thought it would only take 3 days at most to transfer service. Unfortunately, the predicted â˜ready dateâ™ was two weeks, October 18th to be exact. It was not possible for me to be without access to the internet for longer than at least a week and that was still pushing it. While waiting for the DSL service to be activated Verizon offers complementary dial-up in the mean time. This didnâ™t mean much to me as my main desktops donâ™t even have modems! However, all of the laptops do, but Iâ™m spoiled by broadband so it didnâ™t matter.

My solution to the two week wait was to have Road Runner turned on when the cable was being switched.

The first thing I do is check my bandwidth: 4.7Mbps/359Kbps.

Oh, the speed Iâ™ve been dying to get DSL to pump out.

Two days after Road Runner is connected, my DSL is suddenly active, according to James Earl Jones when he called to inform me of the news.

I hook up the DSL and get a direct wired connection to my laptop and check its speed: 1.5Mbps/367Kbps. Which is actually faster than my previous connection with DSL.

Which puts me into a dilemma: Iâ™m wondering which ISP to call to disconnect service. Iâ™ve been doing pros and cons for a while now and Iâ™m still stuck.

Road Runner:
Roughly four times fast than my DSL. This is my only pro, obviously. However, the cons:
Road Runners Usenet , justâ¦just, well, it SUCKS. Newsgroup retention is 2 days, if Iâ™m lucky. Everything is incomplete and doesnâ™t carry five of my regular groups. Road Runner is never stable for me. Every three days the connection is out for "maintenance".

Verizon DSL:

Usenet retention is about 11 days. Never incomplete. Carries all of my groups. The speed is two times faster than my previous speed with DSL. I've only experienced two outages with DSL in two years.

Now, I can keep road runner and subscribe to a premium news server, like Giganews. But for the package I want Iâ™ll be paying an extra $25.00 a month. Which, I probably would do if I wasnâ™t paying $30.00 a month in online games already.

Well, after going through this list in text, I think Iâ™m going to stay with DSL and cancel Road Runner. Yeah, thatâ™s what Iâ™ll do. I think.

Google map of local sex offenders in Tampa (33603)

I've been extremely busy lately, thought I'd share an interesting link for now. We're in the process of moving. I was happy to hear the most devastating news about our move today: It's going to take up to TWO WEEKS before my DSL is active in the new apartment. That's IF I can run DSL there. So, as of Thursday I'll be without a net connection (aside from complementary dial-up).

I'll have to figure out what I'm going to do about my hosting situation, since I run my own server.

Nip/Tuck [Sep. 28th, 2005|10:04 am]
Guilty Pleasure Confession #135: I love Nip/Tuck. It's one of two soap-opera-esque shows I ritually watch, the other being The 4400. However, am I alone when I think John Hensley (who plays Matt McNamara on Nip/Tuck) has a bizarre, uncanny resemblance to Michael Jackson?

Voiding Warranties [Sep. 11th, 2005|10:56 am]
It finally happened, I got burned out on my Dreamcast. I haven't officially retired it, it still has a home on the entertainment center, but has remained unused for a several months now. It was time for a new console to adorn the entertainment center. It took a lot of reasoning to pick which new console to get. In the end, my decision was solely made on the fact that there are 2 Playstation 2's (PS2) in my family. Therefore, if I start jonesing for a PS2 fix, I can just hit my mum or my brother up for theirs for a while. Which led me to buy an XBOX. How could I resist buying an XBOX when it's bigger than all of my laptops and a VCR stacked atop each other. This thing is the beast of console gaming.

Compared to the new slim PS2, it's a beastly eyesore. I decided to pimp my XBOX to make it more appealing to the eye.

My XBOX now has a clear case, a multi-colored LED in the case that can be programmed to your liking, and an external LED with the same function, just below the power button. Of course, it's sporting a modchip, which was a breeze to install, so imports, backups, region free, FTP server, etc., the whole 9 is now capable. :)
